Seoul to launch futuristic central bus stop “Smart Shelter”

SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA, August 26, 2021 – The Seoul Metropolitan Government announced on August 27 that it will launch the “Smart Shelter,” a central bus stops, to realize futuristic transportation services.

Starting with the first Smart Shelter temporarily opened in the Sungnyemun Gate area on August 19, the city government plans to open upcoming Smart Shelters in the Hongik University area on August 27; in the Hapjeong Station area on September 2; and in the Gonghang-daero area in November.

The Smart Shelter is introduced to improve the condition of old and inconvenient bus stops and enhance citizens’ convenience by providing cutting-edge transportation services. Its artificial intelligence (AI) technology controls passengers’ getting on and off the buses, information on bus stops, and all IoT devices to provide the citizens with state-of-the-art services.

The devices within the Smart Shelter are controlled in real-time through the integrated control system. Based on the TOPIS (Seoul Transport Operation and Information Services) data, the Smart Shelter can designate where the buses are supposed to stop at the stations; and control the opening/closing of screen doors and the operation of air conditioners or heaters, which will promote an efficient operation tailored to different situations.

In order to prevent the danger of the COVID-19 spread, the screen doors will always open while necessary preventive measures will be simultaneously and thoroughly implemented, including infrared cameras and hand sanitizers.

In the Smart Shelter, solar panels are installed to generate eco-friendly energy directly. In order to reduce power consumption, the Smart Shelter focuses on efficiently managing energy usage through all-the-time energy monitoring, low-power IoT devices, and big data.

The Smart Shelter is also equipped with safety features such as intelligent video systems and CTVs.

Moreover, they hold a strong air purification capacity as air sterilizers are installed with an electronic display showing the air quality based on automatic measurement.

Meanwhile, the Smart Shelter’s universal design will help the transportation vulnerable use the services with more convenience than before. If they press an alert button while waiting for a bus, they will be informed when low-floor buses are expected to arrive; at the same time, the alert message is sent to bus drivers that the passengers are waiting for the vehicles. Foreign language guidance and voice guide service for the blind are provided as well. The Smart Shelter also ensures citizens’ safety as the emergency bell system is automatically connected to local police agencies.

The Seoul Metropolitan Government will continue the pilot operation of the Smart Shelter until August 2023 and then collect and analyze the profit/cost data of the bus stop operation to lay the basis for expanding the installation of the Smart Shelter.

“Seoul will strive to contribute to improving the transportation convenience for bus passengers by thoroughly analyzing the project feasibility and effectiveness, and citizens’ complaints to find solutions by running the pilot operation for next two years, and closely examine the project timeline and feasible operation methods regarding the expansion of the Smart Shelters,” said Baek Ho, Deputy Mayor for City Transportation at the Seoul Metropolitan Government
